FraseFormaExemplo
Adjetivo curto the + adjetivo + -estIt's the oldest street in the city.
Termina em -e the + adjetivo + -stWhich one is the nicest?
Vogal + consoante no fim dobra a consoante + -estIt's the hottest month of the year.
Termina em -y troca o y por -iestSaturday is the busiest day of the week.
Adjetivo longo the most + adjetivoIt's the most popular event of the summer.
Irregular good → the best, bad → the worst, far → the farthestThis is the best day of my trip!

Os outros de duas sílabas ou mais levam the most: the most famous, the most beautiful, the most popular.
  • Nunca as duas coisas juntas: the cheapest ou the most expensive, e não the most cheapest.
  • Depois do superlativo, use in com lugares e grupos no singular (in the city, in Bayview, in my family) e of com períodos de tempo e grupos no plural (of the year, of my trip, of all).
  • One of the + superlativo + substantivo no plural é o nosso "um dos mais": one of the cheapest places downtown.

Erros comuns de brasileiro

  • Errado:It's the most cheap hotel in the city.

Certo:It's the cheapest hotel in the city.

  • Errado:This is the better pizza in town.

Certo:This is the best pizza in town.

Em inglês, better compara duas coisas e the best é o primeiro do grupo. Do mesmo jeito, worse e the worst.

  • Errado:São Paulo is the biggest city of Brazil.

Certo:São Paulo is the biggest city in Brazil.

Com lugares, o inglês usa in: in Brazil, in the world, in the city.

  • Errado:It's the more expensive restaurant in town.

Certo:It's the most expensive restaurant in town.

No superlativo, adjetivo longo leva the most.

  1. What is the oldest place in your city? What is it like?
  2. Which is the best place to eat in your neighborhood? Why?
  3. What is the hottest month of the year where you live? And the rainiest?
  4. Who is the funniest person in your family?
  5. Think of three places you know. Which one is the most beautiful? Which one is the farthest from your home?

Dicas para usar em aula

  • Comece com três fotos no quadro, de três cidades ou três praias, e pergunte: Which one is the biggest? Which one is the most beautiful?
  • Para chegar à regra, a turma separa os superlativos do diálogo em grupos: -est (the oldest), -st (the nicest), consoante dobrada (the biggest, the hottest), -iest (the busiest, the friendliest), the most (the most famous) e irregulares (the best, the worst, the farthest). Depois, cada um marca o in ou o of que vem logo depois.
  • Para fechar, em pares, cada aluno monta um guia da própria cidade com cinco superlativos: the oldest building, the best food, the most beautiful view.

Perguntas frequentes

Quando usar -est e quando usar the most?

Adjetivo de uma sílaba leva -est: old, the oldest. Os outros de duas sílabas ou mais levam the most: the most famous, the most beautiful. Alguns de duas sílabas aceitam as duas formas, como quiet (the quietest ou the most quiet) e simple (the simplest ou the most simple), mas na escola a regra geral basta.

In ou of depois do superlativo?

Com lugares e grupos no singular, in: the tallest building in Bayview, the youngest in my family. Com períodos de tempo e grupos no plural, of: the hottest month of the year, the best of all, the most beautiful of the three beaches. A troca mais comum do brasileiro é o of no lugar do in, como em the biggest city of Brazil, quando o certo é in Brazil.

Qual a diferença entre comparativo e superlativo?

O comparativo compara duas coisas e vem com than: A taxi is faster than the bus. O superlativo escolhe o primeiro de um grupo de três ou mais e vem com the: the cheapest way to get there.
