| Frase | Forma | Exemplo |
|---|---|---|
| Adjetivo curto | adjetivo + -er + than | The internet here is slower than in the city. |
| Termina em -e | adjetivo + -r | The weather is nicer in spring. |
| Vogal + consoante no fim | dobra a consoante + -er | It's bigger than my old apartment. |
| Termina em -y | troca o y por -ier | Are the people friendlier there? |
| Adjetivo longo | more + adjetivo + than | Is it more boring than the city? |
| Irregular | good → better, bad → worse, far → farther | The traffic is worse than last year. |
Os outros de duas sílabas ou mais levam more: more boring, more expensive, more comfortable.
- Nunca as duas coisas juntas: cheaper ou more expensive, e não more cheaper.
- Much antes do comparativo aumenta a diferença, como o nosso "muito mais": much quieter, much faster.
- Na negativa e na pergunta, o comparativo não muda: It isn't more boring. Is the train better than the bus?
Erros comuns de brasileiro
-
Errado:
The rent is more cheaper here.Certo:The rent is cheaper here.
-
Errado:
The train is faster then the bus.Certo:The train is faster than the bus.
Then é "então" ou "depois". O "que" da comparação é than.
-
Errado:
This book is interestinger than the movie.Certo:This book is more interesting than the movie.
Adjetivo longo não leva -er. Com interesting, expensive e comfortable, use more.
-
Errado:
Life here is more good than in the city.Certo:Life here is better than in the city.
Good é irregular: o comparativo é better.
- Kate Hi, Dan! Can you see me now? The internet here is slower than in the city.
- Dan Now I can. So, how is life in Green Hill? Is it better than the city?
- Kate In some ways, yes. It's much quieter than our old street, and I sleep better.
- Dan Lucky you. My street gets noisier every year. And your new house?
- Kate It's bigger than my old apartment, and the rent is cheaper. I have a garden now!
- Dan A garden? Wow. Are the people friendlier there?
- Kate Much friendlier. My neighbor brought me a cake on my first day.
- Dan That never happens here. And how do you get to work?
- Kate I walk. It's only ten minutes. It's faster than the bus, and it's healthier, too.
- Dan My bus takes an hour now. The traffic is worse than last year.
- Kate Poor you! But Green Hill isn't perfect. Everything is farther away. The mall is forty minutes by car.
- Dan Forty minutes? And the shops? Do they close earlier there?
- Kate Yes, at six o'clock. And in winter it's colder, because we're near the mountains.
- Dan Is it more boring than the city? What do you do on Saturday nights?
- Kate It isn't more boring, just different. There's live music in the square, and it's more fun than a crowded club.
- Dan Honestly, your life sounds better than mine. I'm a little jealous!
- Kate Then come and visit me! The weather is nicer in spring.
- Dan Okay, I'll come in April. Is the train better than the bus?
- Kate Yes. The train is more expensive, but it's more comfortable and much faster.
- Dan Deal. See you in April. I hope your internet is faster by then!

- Is your town bigger or smaller than Green Hill? What else is different?
- Which is better for you: a big city or a small town? Why?
- How do you get to school or work? Is it faster or cheaper than another way?
- Is your street quieter or noisier than the city center?
- Think of two places you know. Which one is more interesting? Why?
Dicas para usar em aula
- Comece com duas fotos no quadro, uma cidade grande e uma cidade pequena, e pergunte: Which is quieter? Which is more expensive?

Perguntas frequentes
Qual a diferença entre than e then?
Than é o "que" da comparação: faster than the bus. Then quer dizer "então" ou "depois": First we eat, then we go.
It's more fun than a crowded club.
Para distância, as duas servem: The mall is farther away ou further away.
