Will e won't em 1 minuto

Will fala do futuro em três situações do dia a dia: oferecer ajuda ou decidir alguma coisa na hora (I'll take this box, eu levo essa caixa), prometer (I won't tell anyone, não vou contar para ninguém) e dizer o que a gente acha que vai acontecer (I think it'll rain, acho que vai chover). Won't é a negativa, a forma curta de will not. Na fala, will quase sempre vira 'll: I'll, you'll, she'll.

FraseFormaExemplo
Afirmativa sujeito + will ('ll) + verbo na forma básicaI'll carry it up the stairs.
Negativa sujeito + won't (will not) + verboI won't tell anyone.
Pergunta Will + sujeito + verbo? Will they fit in your car?
Pedido Will you + verbo? Will you get the door?
Resposta curta Yes + sujeito + will. No + sujeito + won't.Yes, I will. No, I won't.

Atenção

  • Will é igual para todas as pessoas: I will, she will, they will.
Em inglês, aqui entra o will: The door is closed? I'll get it. O mesmo vale para a promessa: I'll call you tomorrow, eu te ligo amanhã.
O probably vem depois do will e antes do won't: It will probably rain. It probably won't take long.
  • Plano decidido antes da conversa fica com going to: My brother is going to bring his truck tomorrow. It's going to rain.
  • Na pronúncia, won't soa /woʊnt/, com o mesmo o de go e de don't. Want soa /wɑːnt/, mais aberto. Na escrita, a pista é o to: I want to go (quero ir), I won't go (não vou).

Erros comuns de brasileiro

  • Errado:I will to help you with the boxes.

Certo:I will help you with the boxes.

Depois de will, o verbo vem direto, sem to. O to aparece em want to e em going to, mas não em will.

  • Errado:She will helps you tomorrow.

    Certo:She will help you tomorrow.

Com he, she e it, nem o will nem o verbo que vem depois ganham -s. O verbo fica na forma básica.

  • Errado:Don't worry, I call you tomorrow.

Certo:Don't worry, I'll call you tomorrow.

Em inglês, a oferta e a promessa pedem will. O presente simples não faz esse papel.

  • Errado:I will travel to Salvador in July. I bought the tickets last month.

Certo:I'm going to travel to Salvador in July. I bought the tickets last month.

  2. A friend is moving to a new apartment this weekend. How will you help?
  3. Make a promise to someone in your family. What will you do? What won't you do?

The door is closed and my hands are full. I'm thirsty. The phone is ringing. I'll: I'll get the door. I'll get you some water. Se alguém disser I get, reescreva a frase no quadro com o 'll.
Na segunda, os alunos anotam as frases em três colunas: oferta (I'll take this big box first), promessa (I won't drop it) e previsão (I think it'll rain this afternoon).
  • Para separar will de going to, compare duas falas do diálogo: My brother is going to bring his truck tomorrow (já estava combinado) e I'll take this big box first (a Amy decidiu na hora).
You won't have homework tomorrow.). O colega responde I think you're right ou I don't think so, e os dois trocam de papel.

Perguntas frequentes

Qual a diferença entre will e going to?

Going to é para o plano que já estava decidido antes: My brother is going to bring his truck tomorrow. Will é para o que se decide na hora em que se fala (The door is closed? I'll get it.), para oferta e para promessa. It's going to rain.

Quando usar 'll e quando escrever will?

Na fala, will quase sempre vira 'll depois de pronome: I'll, you'll, she'll, it'll. Will por extenso aparece em textos formais, quando se quer dar ênfase (I will call you, I promise) e na resposta curta afirmativa, que nunca leva 'll: Yes, I will, e não Yes, I'll. Nos exercícios desta página, I'll e I will contam como certas.

Will you...?

Will you get the door? é um pedido, do mesmo jeito que Can you get the door? Já Will you need my car tomorrow? é uma pergunta sobre o futuro. No pedido para alguém que você não conhece bem, o inglês costuma usar Could you, que soa mais educado: Could you get the door, please?

Um exercício rápido: diga frases como I won't go e I want to go e peça para a turma levantar a mão quando ouvir o "não". Na escrita, a pista é o to: want vem com to (I want to go), won't não (I won't go).
