FraseFormaExemplo
Condição if + had + particípioIf we had left home at seven,
Resultado would have + particípiowe would have caught the flight.
Negativa no if if + hadn't + particípioIf we hadn't waited there, we would have made it.
Negativa no resultado wouldn't have + particípioIf you had packed last night, you wouldn't have spent half an hour looking for it.
Pergunta would + sujeito + have + particípio + ifWhat would you have done if there hadn't been any seats?
Forma curta If I'd + particípio, I'd have + particípioIf I'd known, I'd have told him.

Atenção

  • O third conditional fala do contrário do que aconteceu: If we had left home at seven quer dizer "se a gente tivesse saído às sete", e eles não saíram. Would have caught é o "teria pegado", e eles não pegaram.
  • Na fala, had e would viram 'd. Para saber qual é qual, olhe a palavra seguinte: 'd + particípio é had (If I'd known = If I had known); 'd + have é would (I'd have told = I would have told). Would have também vira would've.
  • Para comparar os três: If it rains tomorrow, we will stay home (first: pode acontecer). If I had more time, I would travel (second: imaginado agora). If we had left at seven, we would have caught the flight (third: imaginado no passado, quando já não dá para mudar).
  • A ordem pode inverter, e aí a vírgula não é necessária: We would have caught the flight if we had left at seven. No resultado também cabem could have e might have, mas would have é o mais comum e é o que esta atividade pratica.

Erros comuns de brasileiro

  • Errado:If I would have known, I would have told you.

Certo:If I had known, I would have told you.

Depois de if não entra would have. Onde o português usa "se eu tivesse sabido", o inglês usa had + particípio. Alguns nativos falam assim na conversa informal, mas muita gente considera errado, e na escrita e nas provas a forma é If I had known.

  • Errado:If I'd knew, I'd have told you.

    Certo:If I'd known, I'd have told you.

  • Errado:If we had left earlier, we would caught the flight.

Certo:If we had left earlier, we would have caught the flight.

O resultado leva would have + particípio, o nosso "teria pegado".

  • Errado:If I had more time yesterday, I would have helped you.

Certo:If I had had more time yesterday, I would have helped you.

Com yesterday, a condição é do passado: had had. O primeiro had é o auxiliar e o segundo é o particípio de have.

0:00 / 1:26
  1. Laura Dan, look. The gate for our flight to Lisbon is closed.
  2. Dan I can't believe it. It closed at nine forty, and we got here at nine fifty.
  3. Laura Ten minutes! If we had left home at seven, we would have caught the flight.
  4. Dan I know. But I couldn't find my passport. It was in my old jacket.
  5. Laura If you had packed last night, you wouldn't have spent half an hour looking for it.
  6. Dan True. And then the taxi went through the city center.
  7. Laura The driver asked us which way to go, remember? You said the city was faster.
  8. Dan I didn't know about the traffic. If I'd known, I'd have told him to take the highway.
  9. Laura And we didn't check in online, so we waited in that long line.
  10. Dan Twenty minutes in that line! If we hadn't waited there, we would have made it.
  11. Laura Maybe. Do you think they would have opened the gate if we had asked nicely?
  12. Dan No way. Asking nicely wouldn't have helped. So what happens now?
  13. Laura I talked to the airline. There's another flight at six tonight. I bought two seats, fifty euros each.
  14. Dan A hundred euros! If I'd found my passport sooner, we wouldn't have spent all that money.
  15. Laura Well, at least we can still go. If there hadn't been any seats, we would have lost the whole weekend.
  16. Dan That's true. Sorry, Laura. It was my fault.
  17. Laura Not only yours. If I'd set my alarm earlier, we'd have had more time too.
  18. Dan Okay. Next time, we'll pack the night before and check in online.
  19. Laura And we'll leave home three hours before the flight.
  20. Dan Deal. Now let's get some coffee. We have eight hours to wait.

  1. Have you ever missed a bus, a train or a flight? What would have happened if you had left home earlier?
  2. Think of a mistake you made last year. What would you have done differently?
  3. What would you have done if you had been Dan this morning?
  4. If you had been born in another country, what language would you have learned first?
  5. Think of a good decision you made. What would have been different if you hadn't made it?

Pergunte What would have happened if I had left earlier? e anote as respostas no quadro.
If you had packed last night...). A comparação mostra que o third conditional fala do contrário do que aconteceu.
  • Faça uma corrente de consequências: um aluno diz If I hadn't missed the bus, I wouldn't have been late. O próximo começa pelo resultado: If I hadn't been late, I wouldn't have... E a corrente segue pela sala.
  • Escreva no quadro If I'd known, I'd have told him e peça que a turma diga qual 'd é had e qual é would.

Perguntas frequentes

If I had more time, I would travel. O third imagina um passado diferente, que já não dá para mudar: If I had had more time last year, I would have traveled. Muda o verbo: passado simples e would no second; had + particípio e would have + particípio no third.

Como saber se o 'd é had ou would?

Olhe a palavra seguinte. 'd + particípio é had: If I'd known quer dizer If I had known. 'd + have é would: I'd have told him quer dizer I would have told him. E 'd + verbo na forma base também é would, como no second conditional: I'd go.

If I would have known está errado?

Na escrita e nas provas, a forma é If I had known. Would have fica só no resultado: If I had known, I would have told you.

E o mixed conditional?

If I hadn't met her, I wouldn't be here now quer dizer "se eu não a tivesse conhecido, não estaria aqui agora".
